Estuarine Crocodile Research

Listed as vulnerable in Queensland, estuarine crocodiles are apex predators within their environment but remain relatively poorly known in northern Cape York.

To better understand these animals on Apudthama, People For Wildlife is:
-
Fitting satellite trackers to crocodiles within isolated sand dune lakes and on animals utilise turtle breeding ground on crab island, to under their seasonal movement patterns.
-
Collaborating with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science and University of Sunshine Coast to establish an array of acoustic receivers to monitoring crocodile movements along the Cape York coastline.

-
Undertaking annual population surveys to assess population health and demography of crocodiles within major river systems
-
Surveying for crocodile nests to understanding nesting habitat, and using camera traps at these nests to assess hatching success, maternal visitation, and predation
