We are committed to ensuring that your privacy is protected. We recognise the essential right of individuals to have their personal information handled in ways they would expect, to be protected and to be made available to them. Personal information is information that directly or indirectly identifies a person.

Personal information that we collect

We collect personal information about individuals including website visitors, subscribers, donors, employees, partners, contractors, job applicants, and other people with whom People For Wildlife or a third party has contact with in connection with People For Wildlife’s activities. The personal information which we collect and hold generally includes your name, address, and contact details (such as your phone number and email address), and payment card details.  

You do not have to provide us with your personal information. However, if you do not provide us with your personal information, it will be difficult for us to contact you. Without your personal information we may not, for example, be able to issue you with a receipt, offer you employment or provide you with more information about our work. 

We may also collect and hold sensitive information. We will only collect sensitive information directly from you and by providing it to us you consent to us collecting, using or disclosing it as specified in this Privacy Statement or as otherwise authorised by law. 

How we collect personal information 

We collect personal information you provide to us directly, for example, in person, over the phone, by email, via filling out a form on our website or by making a donation.  

We will only collect personal information by lawful and fair means and, when possible, we will always collect personal information from you directly. If it is not reasonable or practicable to collect it directly from you, we will take steps to make you aware that your information has been collected. 

We will generally obtain consent from the owner of personal information to collect their personal information. Consent will usually be provided in writing however sometimes it may be provided orally or may be implied through a person’s conduct. When consent is oral or implied, we may make a record of this consent, wherever this information is collected. Sensitive information is only collected with your consent. 

When you visit our website, we may collect and store your computer’s assigned IP address, the date and time of your visit, the information accessed and the referring page. We will also collect other non-identifying data for statistical purposes. This information is not linked to your personal information unless required by law. 

We use a third-party donation service provider, Donorbox, as our online donation platform. For more information, please see Donorbox's privacy policy. 

 

How we use your personal information 

We only collect, use, store and disclose personal information about you if that information is necessary for us to conduct out business. This includes things like: 

  • Sending you correspondence, publications, articles and newsletters telling you about our work; 

  • Carrying out day-to-day administration associated with our functions and activities such as managing volunteers’ contact and interaction; 

  • Look after the safety and wellbeing of people who participate in our programs and activities, including our partners; 

  • Processing payments and collect debts owed to us; 

  • Advising you about campaign issues; 

  • Promoting membership or fundraising matters; 

  • Seeking donations and processing donations and tax receipts; 

  • Inviting you to relevant events or meetings 

 

If we obtain any sensitive information, we will only use it for the purposes listed above, or other directly related purposes or purposes to which you otherwise consent. 

Disclosure of personal information 

Any personal information you provide to us may be disclosed to companies who provide services on our behalf, such as fundraising, mail, database, telephone, digital services, audit, professional advice, payment processing and research services. We may disclose your information to a government, government body, statutory authority or the like where this is required to comply with People For Wildlife’s obligations under an Australian or international law. 

We expect the third parties and service providers we engage with to also look after your information carefully. Our agreements with service providers and external agencies, staff and volunteers and like-minded organisations who handle personal information require them to maintain the confidentiality of the information we provide to them. We will only disclose your personal information for the purposes for which it was initially collected, other directly related purposes or purposes to which you otherwise consent. 

People For Wildlife may also need to store or use personal information in a country other than Australia, usually because one of People For Wildlife’s or one of our service providers technical systems is located or needs to process data overseas or because a service provider is located overseas. 

Keeping your information secure 

We take steps that are reasonable in the circumstances to ensure that your personal information is accurate, complete and up to date. To help us, please advise us of any changes to your personal information to help us maintain accurate, complete and up-to-date information. 

We will also take commercially reasonable steps to protect the personal information we hold from misuse, interference (including computer attacks) and loss and from unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. 

If we no longer need your information, we will take reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify it (unless we are required to retain it by law or a court/tribunal order). 

Accessing your personal information 

If requested by you, we will provide you with access to the personal information we hold about you unless otherwise required or permitted by law.
